Jerrevis dismissed the gate guards and sealed himself into his office. The guards knew nothing, and neither did his spyflies. For the fifth time, the bugs returned without locating Nirissa and, more critically, without locating Fioni’s nursemaid. Had his father done the smart thing and eliminated the old woman?

A stunning thought jerked his breath away. Was Nirissa a senner, too? Had Father gotten rid of her, just as he had disposed of Fioni and the nursemaid?

No, he’d hidden them. He didn’t have the guts to kill his own daughters.

Or did he? He was crazy. He was a drug addict. He collected actual blood for the plantations, even though synthetics would do.

Egress records didn’t show Nirissa, Fioni, or the nursemaid leaving. They had to be somewhere within Cor Rovilet.

Jerrevis sent out new spyflies. The original one set on his father had gone glitchy, with occasional gaps in coverage. This new one worked fine. Embedded in Father’s neckband, it even got past the scrubbers at Corone Center. Jerrevis set his other plans in motion and tended to landcor business as he waited to watch the Council Meeting via the new spyfly. Witnessing the proceedings from Father’s perspective would be good practice. After all, he’d be taking Father’s place very soon.
